Ottantacinque anni compie Quincy Jones nel 2018, dei quali più di settanta trionfalmente passati nello show business. Aveva 14 anni quando a Seattle comincio' a girare con un ragazzo della Florida di due anni più grande, che suonava il piano e purtroppo aveva gravi problemi di vista, Ray Charles. Da allora il genio di Chicago non si è più fermato. Trombettista jazz, polistrumentista, compositore, arrangiatore, produttore, direttore musicale, autore di colonne sonore per cinema, teatro e televisione, titolare o responsabile di case discografiche, attore. Forse basta dire che proprio lui ha prodotto il disco più venduto della storia, Thriller di Michael Jackson. E che Fly Me to The Moon, da lui arrangiata per Frank Sinatra con la big band di Count Basie, fu la prima canzone suonata sulla Luna da Buzz Aldrin nella missione della Nasa, nel 1969.
Una carriera incredibile che ha fatto di "Q" una icona dello spettacolo, non solo della musica, ed uno degli intellettuali afroamericani più rispettati e influenti di sempre. E non si può dire che sia stato un genio incompreso se si pensa che tra i riconoscimenti che gli sono piovuti addosso, non solo in America (la Francia lo ha insignito della Legion d' Honneur) ci sono 79 nomination e 28 vittorie ai Grammy, incluso il piu prestigioso di tutti, il Grammy Legend Award, assegnato soltanto a quindici artisti. Le lauree ad honorem e i master delle più prestigiose università, da Harvard a Princeton a Seattle, non si contano. Una fama ed una credibilità che Quincy Jones ha speso anche in una intensa e appassionata attività per i diritti civili e le cause umanitarie, dal sostegno a Martin Luther King e Nelson Mandela fino alla famosa campagna "We are the world", inno di una umanità senza barriere e discriminazioni di qualunque tipo.

Per celebrare gli 85 anni di questa icona della musica Umbria Jazz ha organizzato uno spettacolo che è anche una festa di compleanno. Sul palco dell'arena Santa Giuliana si alterneranno, presentati dallo stesso Jones, grandi artisti che in passato hanno lavorato con lui: la star della canzone americana Patti Austin, i virtuosi della vocalità jazz Take 6, la regina del nu soul Erykah Badu, un grande della musica brasiliana, Ivan Lins, e, da Cuba, Alfredo Rodriguez e Pedrito Martinez.
In più, ci sarà come ospite speciale Paolo Fresu.
